De gong; een eewenoude traditie

The gong: an age-old tradition

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world and a household name in the Netherlands and abroad. As early as the 17th century, trading was opened and closed by sounding a gong. Today, all securities trading is automated and the opening is a ceremonial act. Directors of listed companies, business people, politicians and charity ambassadors have helped keep this tradition alive in recent years.

KAS BANK opens trading at the exchange with gong ceremony

Sikko van Katwijk, Chairman of KAS BANK’s Managing Board, opens trading at the Euronext Amsterdam exchange. Joining him at the opening are several clients from the financial and pensions industries.

KAS BANK (ticker symbol: KA) opens trading on the occasion of the bank’s recent win of “Custodian of the Year” at the annual European Pensions Awards held in London in early June. In addition to the recognition of the role of KAS BANK, this award is seen by KAS BANK as reward for the prominent and innovative role of the entire Dutch pensions and securities industries within Europe.

One of the recent innovations that the independent jury referred to in their motivation to recognize KAS BANK, was the launch last year of a cost benchmarking service. This initiative has been acknowledged as an important step towards greater transparency of the true cost to pension funds of the total investment process. Not only enhancing transparency for an individual scheme, it shows how these costs compare to a similar group of pension funds. As a result of this information trustee boards, pension fund professionals, members and all stakeholders now better understand the total costs of running the fund, both explicit and implicit. Since the start of the initiative, more than 50 pension funds have signed up to participate in the benchmark. This makes this cost benchmark one of the most used in the Netherlands.

Euronext has invited the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Regional Development Companies to put their work in the spotlight during the Week of Regional Entrepreneurship.

During the Week of the Regional Entrepreneurship, the honors on this trading day belonged to representatives from PPM Oost who, together with the directors of companies in which they have invested, sent a signal as to how important innovation is for the economic health of these companies, the regional economy and the country as a whole.

PPM Oost (Participatiemaatschappij Oost Nederland NV), is the regional venture capital company that is part of East Netherlands Development Agency (Oost NV). Its role is to select promising, innovative companies in which to invest in, using funds from the Dutch government and the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel. The advisors at PPM Oost understand that many innovative, starting business owners fail to succeed in making the growth transition from product development to a thriving enterprise that generates revenue resulting in profit. By not only making wise use of government funding, but also enlisting their networks, knowledge and experience,
PPM Oost can help companies in making this transition successfully.

Week of Regional Entrepreneurship – Ministry of Economic affairs visits Beursplein 5

From 19 to 26 August, the gong ceremony at Beursplein 5 focuses on the activity and entrepreneurship in the various regions in the Netherlands. Euronext has invited the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Regional Development Companies to put their work in the spotlight during the Week of Regional Entrepreneurship.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs kicks off the Week of Regional Entrepreneurship with the sounding of the gong by Norbert van den Hove, deputy director of the Enterprise Department. He opens trading in the presence of all those involved from the Ministry with the Dutch Regional Development Companies (RDCs).

The Ministry, along with regional governments (mostly provinces), is a shareholder and grant provider of five RDCs (NOM, Oost NV, LIOF, BOM and IQ). The RDCs connect national innovation and top sector policy with regional economic policy, and are important for the (regional) services to innovative SMEs. RDCs support and finance innovations of SMEs and contribute to the economic growth and employment of their region. The RDCs have three important tasks in this regard. In the Netherlands the RDCs play an important role in providing risk- capital to new companies and financing young companies. Apart from the additional funds made available by the provinces, the capital of the joint RDCs amounts to almost €300 million. The RDCs are therefore one of the largest providers of risk capital for these type of companies in the Netherlands. Furthermore, RDCs connect start-ups, SMEs and large companies, building on joint ventures, new clusters, programmes and business consortia. Lastly, RDC’s attract foreign companies, which results in additional employment and innovation and leads the way to international markets for SMEs.
