The gong: an age-old tradition

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world and a household name in the Netherlands and abroad. As early as the 17th century, trading was opened and closed by sounding a gong. Today, all securities trading is automated and the opening is a ceremonial act. Directors of listed companies, business people, politicians and charity ambassadors have helped keep this tradition alive in recent years.

    Saxo - Investing in a world of investment opportunities

    In 1998, the Danish-based company Saxo opened many doors for the investment market by introducing one of the first online investment platforms for private investors. With the acquisition of the Dutch firm Binck Bank in 2019, Saxo has continued to seek for ways to lower access barriers to financial markets for existing and new investors. With a new fee structure, Saxo aims to further reduce the effect of costs on returns.

    To celebrate this, Stephan Lugtenburg, COO at Saxo, struck the Gong.

    The group was welcomed by Dirk Donker (Head of Secondary Markets Benelux & Germany) and Paul Noordam (Senior Manager Sales and Product Management Cash Equities & Derivatives) of Euronext Amsterdam.

    Winner of digital investment competition for schools (Scholenstrijd)

    Thousands of secondary school students from all over the Netherlands are taking part in Scholenstrijd, a digital investment competition where they playfully learn about the opportunities and risks of the stock market and investing.

    Scholenstrijd, an initiative of Stichting Capital Amsterdam, is a semi-annual event that is part of the broader education platform BeleggerUitlegger.

    Today, the autumn 2023 winner of the 'Best risk-return ratio' category, Samuel Groenendaal of Jacob-Roelands Lyceum from Boxtel was welcomed on the Gong stage by Albert Siepel, head of Index Product Management.

    Euronext Welcomes the Dwight David Eisenhower School

    Founded in 1924 as the US Army Industrial College and now part of the National Defense University, the Eisenhower School has a long history as a military training institution. Current students come from the various US army units, the private and public sectors and mostly hold managerial positions. An important part of the Finance Study is an introduction to key players in the European capital market.

    Heineken celebrates 85th listing anniversary

    Heineken and Euronext Amsterdam have been closely linked for decades. The 160-year-old icon listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange in 1939, 85 years ago. And together with 12 other funds, the Amsterdam brewer was at the birth of the AEX Index.

    To celebrate these milestones, a new trading day was opened today in Amsterdam with a loud bang on the Gong, by Heineken CEO Dolf van den Brink together with CFO Harold van den Broek.

    They were welcomed, together with colleagues, by René van Vlerken (Head of Listings Euronext Amsterdam).

    NVA and Brunel open trading day for World Autism Day

    The Dutch Autism Association (NVA) together with Brunel opened the trading day on Tuesday 2 April to celebrate World Autism Day.

    Brunel International N.V., the business services provider which has been listed on Euronext Amsterdam for over 25 years, has been raising the visibility of Dutch Autism Day through its Brunel Foundation for several years.

    The gong was sounded by Evelien Britt, a volunteer with the NVA Information & Advice Line.

    For the 10th time in a row, Euronext Amsterdam is giving extensive consideration to the celebration of International Women's Day. By organizing a series of events in all European locations, Euronext aims to stimulate the necessary discussion on promoting gender equality in the financial sector. The celebration of International Women's Day is a collaboration with UN Women Netherlands, UN Global Compact Netherlands, Women in ETFs, Optiver, Flow Traders and Dutchess Capital. The day will be festively kicked off with a traditional Gong ceremony, followed by an extensive morning and afternoon program with numerous inspiring speakers and representatives of the Dutch capital market and AEX companies.     Dutch investor association VEB celebrates 100th year anniversary

    Since 1924, investor association VEB has represented the interests of investors. Every reason to celebrate its 100th anniversary this morning with a loud Gong beat in Rotterdam, opening the trading day on Euronext Amsterdam.

    The VEB is not only the oldest, but also the largest representative of investors in Europe. The anniversary year is kicked off today with an anniversary conference at the Rotterdam Doelen.

    In a sold-out hall, filled with VEB members and prominent figures from the Dutch and European listed world, including Euronext CEO Stéphane Boujnah, many facets of the capital market will be the subject of discussion.

    Completion of €30 mln Series C funding by Onera Health

    Today Onera Health celebrated the closing of a €30M ($32M) Series C financing round with a Gong ceremony at Euronext Amsterdam.

    The capital round, led by EQT Life Sciences and co-led by Gimv, solidifies Onera Health's leadership in sleep diagnostic solutions. Existing investors, including Innovation Industries, Invest-NL, imec.xpand, BOM and 15th Rock, also contributed to the successful financing.

Open the trading day at Euronext Amsterdam

Companies or institutions that have a natural connection to the Amsterdam capital market can be invited to take part in a gong ceremony. For example, this might be to mark a special milestone or to raise awareness of a charity. 

The ceremony starts with a reception hosted by a senior Euronext Amsterdam representative in the former Board Room at Beursplein 5. Just before 9 am, the participants and their guests take their place on the gong stage to open the trading day, The gong is sounded at 9 am precisely. The group then  returns to the Boardroom for a cup of coffee. 

Media coverage

The gong strike is broadcast live every morning on RTL Z. A picture of the gong strike illustrates the daily stock market report on the Financiële Telegraaf's website. In addition, Euronext shares the images on its social media channels.

Photos and video footage taken of the gong ceremony are shared with guests, who are free to use them for their own communications and on social media.

Timings for gong ceremonies at Beursplein 5 are as follows:

Reception: 8.30 am

Sounding of the gong: 9.00 am

End: 9.15 - 9.30 am

Group size: minimum 8 people, maximum 15 people.

There is no charge for the gong ceremony.

Additional options

You can combine your gong ceremony with the Amsterdam Exchange Experience: a special tour of the stock exchange building. 

Or if you would like to use the gong ceremony to kick off a conference or event, consider organising your event at Beursplein 5. Euronext has several historic rooms where events for 10 to 150 people can be held.
