The gong: an age-old tradition
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world and a household name in the Netherlands and abroad. As early as the 17th century, trading was opened and closed by sounding a gong. Today, all securities trading is automated and the opening is a ceremonial act. Directors of listed companies, business people, politicians and charity ambassadors have helped keep this tradition alive in recent years.

Mario Willemsen, Manager Finance and Control of the Dierenbescherming rings the bell for the annual fundraising campaign named ‘Help ons redden’. Each year they save thousands of animals in need for which they need support.
On this worldwide animals Day they also ask attention for the existence of a benchmark about animal welfare, in which big global and Dutch companies in the food industry have gone through an assessment of the company practice on farm animal welfare. This benchmark, funded by other animal welfare organisations gives possibilities to make sustainable investments which are proven animal friendly. In taking account animal welfare concepts investors can give animals the share which they deserve.
The Dutch animal protection company, de Dierenbescherming, is pleased to work together with commercial businesses to achieve an animal friendly environment. Therefore, they are looking for more companies and financial partners who are willing to conduct a sustainable business model.
The Dierenbescherming endeavours to diminish or prevent disrupted animal welfare and tries to improve the conditions for animals as for human being with animals. This is done by various projects and in cooperation with service companies like Dierenbuddy and a Helpdesk for animal-aid workers.
Partner animal welfare organisations such as Compassion in World Farming and World Animal Protection funded the actual benchmark for animal welfare. This benchmark is used as working practice with global companies in the food industry. To see which investors already use and support this benchmark, click here.
The Dierenbescherming
The Dierenbescherming, a nationwide organisation, is devoted to save animals day or night. This work is done by specially designed animal ambulances, animal shelters, special inspectors and thousands of volunteers all over the country. On a yearly basis they give shelter to 20.000 animals whereas their ambulances respond to about 65.000 calls for assistance.
Their inspectors of the Landelijke Inspectiedienst Dierenbescherming (LID) and special field volunteers deal with thousands of calls of neglect or abuse of animals. Furthermore, the Dierenbescherming gives information at schools, lobbies with political parties and tries to prevent future animal suffering by their field workers.
With the ‘Beter Leven keurmerk’ of the Dierenbescherming they annually save more than 35 millions animals in live stock farming.

TU Delft is a shareholder and partner in this company. The jury was unanimous: "It is seen as a breakthrough technology for the world. Every architect can apply it this way. PHYSEE stands for a future in which buildings become energy positive without compromising on the aesthetics of the facades. That makes this company a justified winner. "
PHYSEE's patented invention consists of solar cells in the glass that generate electricity and sensors that make the glass smart. The solar cells ensure that there is always green energy in the facade. The sensors measure environmental data such as temperature, light and air quality and use this information to cool, heat and illuminate buildings in a more energy-efficient way. Thus, buildings become 25% more energy efficient and comfortable.
